“Travel industry to lead e-commerce trade in India”

Travel will continue lead the online trade of goods and services in India and globally as new business models emerge in e-commerce space, he said while addressing delegates at a conference organised by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

Satpathy said the government is working on a new Information Technology Policy which will propel the growth of low-cost, internet-enabled and hand-held devices. He asked business chambers like ASSOCHAM to be an interface so that industry data gathering and dissemination can be made online.

Chamber secretary general D.S. Rawat said the market size of e-commerce industry is expected to be Rs 46,520 crore by December 2011 with 81 per cent travel transactions and 6 per cent product purchases.

“India is poised to be one of the top e-commerce hubs in the near future as number of internet users boom. This will bring in a new revolution in retail industry,” he said adding the size of e-commerce globally is about 700 billion dollars.

Accelerated innovations have expanded the online retail market to 241 billion dollars in Europe, 176 billion dollars in the United States, 76.4 billion dollars in China and 10.3 billion dollars in India.

The Indian retail industry is currently estimated at 520 billion dollars and e-commerce is a sub-set of it. With high GDP growth rate figures, young population with a median age of 25 years, large and relatively insulated rural tracts coupled with people’s hunger for achievement, the country is projected to witness maximum growth coming from tier II and tier III cities.

At present, small towns contribute 40 per cent of all e-commerce transactions due to increasing broadband penetration. Industry experts say the numbers of people who have ever used internet and personal computer literates have increased to 88 million and 119 million respectively.

India has the second fastest growing travel market globally which is estimated at 42 billion dollars. Of this, the online travel market is expected to grow from 2.9 billion dollars in 2008 to 7 billion dollars by next year.

Others who spoke during the conference were Balendu Srivastava, group business director of e-Tech Group at IMRB International, Kashyap Vadapalli, director of Category Management at eBay India, Dhruv Shringi, co-founder and CEO of yatra.com, Harish Bijoor, CEO of Harish Bijoor Consults Inc and Bikky Khosla, CEO of tradeindia.com.

Ticketless travel leads to ransack

A mob ransacked Baruipur station and tried to set ablaze an RPF office on the premises after a teenager travelling without a ticket was detained.
This is the third time in five weeks that a mob went on the rampage after the authorities cracked the whip on ticketless travellers.
On September 12, a mob had vandalised Bagnan station in Howrah district after a youth travelling without a ticket was run over by a train while fleeing railway officials.
On September 1, Subroto Chatterjee, the chief inspector (ticketing) in the Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division, was assaulted by some vendors when he asked them to produce tickets. Chatterjee suffered head and stomach injuries and had to be admitted to hospital.
At Baruipur station, ticket-checker Biswajit Sen detained the 17-year-old, who had got off the Sealdah-bound Diamond Harbour local, for allegedly travelling without a ticket.
Officials said he was taken to the ticket checkers’ room after he allegedly refused to pay a penalty of Rs 260.
“Word spread that the ticket examiner had beaten up the teenager when he refused to bribe him. Hearing this a mob comprising local people and passengers ransacked the room where the youth was taken and broke furniture,” said a witness.
The divisional railway manager in Sealdah, Purusottam Guha, said: “There was apparently a scuffle between Sen and the passenger, after which the mob forced it’s way into the room.”
Sen tried to escape the mob fury and took shelter in the RPF office but the crowd followed him there and started hurling stones at the office. The mob also tried to set ablaze another RPF office that was under lock and key.
“A few sets of uniform of RPF officers kept in the room were burnt,” said a railway official.
The teenager, who fainted when the mob stormed the room, was taken to the National Medical College and Hospital.
An FIR has been filed against unknown persons.
“We have started a probe and will speak to the youth. We are also collecting information from railway employees who were on duty at the station on Monday morning,” said divisional railway manager Guha. Railway officials said the incident did not disrupt trains in the Sealdah South section.
nBurglary arrest: Three men were allegedly caught red-handed while trying to burgle a house under Ghola police station in Sodepur, on the northern fringes of the city, early on Monday. The trio were beaten up before being handed over to police.

Indian biz packs bags for a busy year

In a recent survey of Indian CFOs by the American Express Business Travel Monitor, a welcome finding was that two-thirds of the executives were planning to increase their travel spend this year. “This is much higher compared to only 40 per cent of CFOs worldwide looking at a higher travel spend,” says Sandeep Shastri, Vice-President and General Manager of American Express’ Global Business Travel in India.

The Indian economy, fuelled by a strong internal demand and a rising middle-class, is considered a “high growth and high potential” market in the aviation industry. “We are witnessing a double-digit growth in travel spending and frequencies among some of our clients in the region and in India.” Indian companies are looking at “a strategic management of their business travel”.

He says that as early as 2007, business travel volumes had started shrinking and in mid-2008, when the financial downturn started, there was a huge drop — almost 40 per cent by 2008-09 — as Indian companies reduced their expenditure on business travel. There was a corresponding shrink in the number of travel agencies and people working in travel trade. Though leisure travel was hit too, business travel took more of a beating.

As companies looked at new ways of managing their travel, those in the travel trade, including Amex, had to look at new technologies like Cisco’s TelePresence and video conferencing. “We helped companies in organising and using such tools.” They also helped clients review their travel policies, initiate new ones, manage travel investment and consolidate travel spends in order to “ride that dollar much further”.

But now that a “new normal” is emerging in business travel, things are looking up for the travel trade. But, of course, companies are still looking to club visits of their employees and get more efficiency from a single trip. Shastri adds that even though both China and India have seen positive economic growth from the second half of 2010, and greater business travel has re-emerged, “companies are still watching their travel budgets”.

During the downtrend many companies, particularly those in the IT sector, opted for economy rather than business-class travel and most IT companies continue this policy. Also, business travellers are looking at budget and mid-range hotels to manage their travel spend better.

As for food, for vegetarians, he says, this continues to be a challenge in some markets like Korea, Japan and China, “though in China you do have a fair number of vegetarian restaurants in the larger cities, but Korea continues to be a challenge.”

Amex does provide a ready-reckoner, particularly for first-time travellers. “We provide a detailed checklist on dos and don’ts, cultural sensitivities etc and many clients are including this in their new-hire orientation.” They are told to ready basic information and relevant documents for immigration, carry local currency, have medical insurance, and the like.

While his team does help out with programmes for spouse/companion where companies allow this in their business travel, the more important area is providing assistance in emergencies.

Giving the example of the recent tsunami in Japan, Shastri says they had 43 client companies with “a very large number of travellers in Japan at that time and we got in touch with all of them. Most of them wanted to get out immediately, but some asked us to create interim measures.” His team helped out with hotel bookings in Tokyo and people were moved to a safer and more secure environment till normalcy was restored.

Much earlier, in Thailand, when the Red Shirts agitation had affected the Bangkok airport, “we organised a chartered flight to fly out a large number of our stranded clients by rerouting them through Singapore. In such emergencies, we have to consider not only hotel and airline availability, but also arrange the required visas. All that homework is fairly complex and we handled it like a project!”

Shastri adds that with an increasing number of women travelling on business, “there is definitely a conscious effort not only from our side but our partners’ — hotels and airlines — to handle the requirements and expectations of women travellers better.” More care is taken in the booking of taxis/cars and many hotels follow more stringent security norms for single-women travellers.

But the most interesting part is that some airlines have introduced exclusive toilets for women.

Go ahead, Google “women-only toilets in airlines” and read some interesting stuff, particularly on some blogs, on what men have to say on this subject!

Will Google Wallet spell the end of plastic?

Google wallet is a mobile app that stores virtual replicas of our existing credit cards and uses this information to make our payments seamlessly with the help of NFC or near field communication. This payment system has gone live recently on September 19th and has got rave reviews from various users. The project though is currently in a nascent stage with only one working phone, the Nexus S 4G and is powered by a Paypass-enabled Citi Mastercard and Google Prepaid cards. The phone is also available only on the Sprint wireless network. These seem to be reasons enough for the critics to write away Google Wallet as a grand launch that will fail spectacularly in a matter of time.
Google also charges nothing for this service, hence leaving a better cut for the merchants. The tons of consumer data that will be collected is the gold mine that Google is after. This data can be used to study consumer patterns and help businesses model their strategies. Google Wallet will thus be a unique tool which will give insight into consumer spending similar to Google search which studies user browsing patterns to give targeted ads.
